The fact is, fat has shouldered most of the blame for <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em>excessive weight gain</em></span> in the last 25 or so years.  We have been so conditioned to hearing of the dangers of too much fat in our food that we ran when we saw more than a couple of grams of fat on our food labels.</p>
<p>This mentality caused people to over-indulge in refined grains and sugars and people became fatter than ever. <span id="more-16"></span></p>
<h2><em><strong>The question is: Is fat dangerous to your health?</strong></em></h2>
<p>The fact is, your great-great-grandparents slathered their food with real butter and they never ate a “fat-free” anything in their entire lives and yet the incidences of obesity and heart disease were much lower in their day.</p>
<p>The addition of HFCS and hydrogenated oils to our diets caused a sudden increase in obesity and heart disease and researchers looked for a cause in the wrong direction.</p>
<p>Because of this, all fats were unfairly blamed for the problems being caused by artificial <a title="trans fats" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_fat" target="_blank"><span style="color: #000000;">trans fats</span></a> in our new “more healthy diet”.</p>
<h2><em><strong><em><strong>So is all fat as dangerous as it is made out to be?</strong></em></strong></em></h2>
<p>Truth is fats are vital to healthy brain function, they help slow the insulin response and facilitate proper hormonal function.  <a title="essential fatty acids" href="http://goodfats.pamrotella.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #000000;">Essential fatty acids</span></a>, the type of fat found in fish (like salmon), walnuts and flax seeds are especially necessary (thus the name “essential”).</p>
<p>Adding these has been shown to improve or eliminate many conditions including psoriasis, depression, addiction and mental illness just to name a few.</p>
<p>Fat is an important food component and should be included (in the proper amount) in each meal along with a protein, high fiber carbohydrate and a vegetable.  This will promote healthy eating habits, prevent bingeing and promote healing for the body and mind. <a title="excessive weight gain" href="http://fastfatlossdiets.com/what-causes-excessive-weight-gain/"><strong>Excessive weight gain</strong></a> has more causes than simply eating too much fat.</p>

There has been a lot of controversy over the last few years concerning how much carbohydrate you should include in your carbs diet.</p>
<p>For years we were brainwashed into believing that it was only fat that made us fat and that we could eat as many carbs as we wanted in the absence of fat.</p>
<p>Many people achieved short term weight loss by using a fat-free plan and every food manufacturer began replacing the fat in their products with either more sugar or other artificial ingredients to replace the missing flavor. <span id="more-27"></span></p>
<h2><em><strong>Good Carbs Bad Carbs</strong></em></h2>
<p>But what the food manufacturers don&#8217;t tell you about is how they make these low-fat foods taste good by pumping them full of sugar. Sugar can cause a number of side effects to your body, but the most visible side effect is the fat that is stored right on your belly and thighs. So, if you really want to lose fat, then avoid processed grains and do NOT eat highly processed cereals in place of real food.</p>
<p>Over a period of about 20 years of low fat/ high carb mentality our country development higher rates of obesity and heart disease than ever before, the exact things that our new low fat/ high carb living were supposed to eradicate.  So what happened?</p>
<h2><em><strong>What are good carbs?</strong></em></h2>
<p>There are two basic types of carbs, simple and complex.  Simple carbs are sugar and they can be used quickly as an energy source.</p>
<p>Any sugar we eat that exceeds our immediate needs for energy are stored as glycogen in the liver to be used as energy when we need it and when we consume more than we can store in the liver it is converted to fat and stored elsewhere in the body.</p>
<p>Complex carbs require more energy to assimilate and give longer lasting energy.  They are also slower to be turned into simple sugars and stored as body fat.</p>
<p>Eating complex carbohydrates that are rich in fiber will make you less likely to overindulge than with simple carbs.  The low carbohydrate calculation uses a “net carbs” figure to determine the amount of carbohydrates that should be consumed.</p>
<p>This figure is determined by taking the total carbohydrate grams and subtracting the grams of fiber and non-insulin affecting sweeteners and carbs such as malitol from the total.</p>
<p>Numerous articles blasting the new<em><strong> low carb diet plan</strong></em> fail to get these facts straight and claim that eating so few carbs will have negative health implications.</p>
<p>They point to studies where decreased mental capacity was observed when eating little or no carbohydrates. The problem with these studies is that none of them followed the guidelines laid out in diets such as Atkins or South Beach.</p>
<p>The participants were given 20 or less total carbs (not net carbs) and were forced to maintain a very low total caloric intake.  When starting in the induction phase of Atkins, 20 net grams of carbs are eaten (which could be 2 or 3 times more in total carbs) and there is no calorie restriction.</p>
<p>A better way to limit total carbs and maintain high energy levels is to rid the diet of white flour and sugar and consume only whole grains in moderate amounts.  The grains should be a complement to the diet and not the main course.</p>

You can barely keep your eyes open and all you want to do is crawl up into a ball and go to sleep. You can’t focus or concentrate on work and even a simple conversation takes effort. All you want to do is lie down.</p>
<p>So many people have this experience on a daily basis. In fact, I was just like this during high school when I would gorge on fast food and pizza and junk.</p>
<p>But this is not how your body should feel after meals.</p>
<p>With a vegetarian meal plan, you won’t be sleepy after you eat. In fact, you’ll be alert, mentally sharp, and physically ready to take on the world.<span id="more-34"></span></p>

<p>I make these really great wraps using a low-carb tortilla, romaine lettuce leaf, or a collard green leaf as the wrap shell.<br />

Despite its extensive presence in our society, diiscovering the causes of excessive weight gain is not a simple task. Of course, weight gain in pregnancy is quite natural, but sometimes it can be more than you would like.</p>
<p>Obese people often place too much emphasis on either the reality or the possibility that some other underlying medical issue is the true cause for their weight gain and inability to take the weight off.</p>
<p>Conversely, society often incorrectly accuses overweight people in general and even more specifically obese people of just being lazy.  It is likely in many cases that neither of these rationales is entirely accurate. <span id="more-12"></span></p>
<p>It is likely the case more often than not, that obesity is a combination of these factors and that most of the factors are interdependent.</p>
<p>To add to the confusion, it is often a case of “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” when looking at the causes of <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em>excessive weight gain</em></span>.</p>
<h2><strong><em>Weight Gain and Depression</em></strong></h2>
<p>For example, a person who becomes depressed often has a <a href="http://www.womenhealthzone.com/womens-health/causes-of-hormonal-imbalance-in-women/" target="_blank">hormone imbalance</a> and overeats to compensate for missing or under-produced hormones.</p>
<p>Did the depression cause poor food choices or did eating the wrong foods in the first place throw the hormones out of balance causing the overeating and the depression?</p>
<p>We may never have the answer to that question.  It certainly does appear that no matter which comes first, the factors involved seem to line up and fall down just like dominoes.</p>
<h2><em><strong>Medical Causes Of Weight Gain</strong></em></h2>
<p>There are also a number of medical conditions that will cause weight gain.  A few examples would be.</p>

<p>To simplify things, these diseases slow or impair the body’s ability to digest, process, or otherwise properly utilize food as an energy source.</p>
<p>What this means in effect is that whatever the body cannot immediately use for energy must either be removed from the body as waste or stored as fat to be used for energy at a later date.</p>
<p>Since the body senses a crisis in its ability to properly burn food for energy, it may decide that food or energy is scarce and work to store as much fat as possible for later use.</p>
<p>This is also why many fat loss diets recommend eating several smaller meals as opposed to a few large ones since any food that cannot be used within two hours for energy will be stored as fat.</p>
<p>As previously stated, excessive weight gain is often caused by medical conditions rather than by simply overeating, and if you suspect this is the case it&#8217;s a good idea to consult your doctor first.</p>
